The art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was founded by the Gracie family in the early 1900's, but was not widely popularized outside of Brazil until 1993 when it was displayed in the first UFC. The use of posture, balance, and leverage allowed an average sized person to not only survive, but also overcome much larger opponents. Additionally, it opened many eyes when the world abruptly learned how real physical conflict unfolds compared to the "fights" in choreographed cinema!
Utilizing clinches, takedowns and other distance management tools, Jiu Jitsu seeks to safely close the distance against and attacker and take him to the ground. Through positional control, and specific isolation techniques the practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can gain the upperhand. Once control is obtained, the Jiu-Jitsu practition can chose between a pin, choke, or joint destruction to end the violent encounter depending on the severity of the circumstance.
With the explosion of popularity BJJ has experienced, it is important to know the legitimacy of your instructor. The Highlander Team is proud of our solid roots!
